Evening Mail

Horace Denham Papers

First published in 1823, amongst those who wrote for The Evening Mail was Bram Stoker who was its drama critic in the late 1800s. In the early decades of the twentieth century it was famous for its ‘Letters to the Editor’ page and the Saturday Sports Mail. The famous cry of Dublin newsboys ‘Herald or Mail’ was disrupted by the arrival of The Evening Press in 1954 – a title that proved to be more popular that the Mail. The Irish Times Ltd purchased the title in 1960 and despite attempts to reinvigorate the paper it ceased publication two years later.
