The establishment of The Irish Press by Eamon de Valera and Fianna Fáil in 1931 prompted allegations that it would be the voice of the party and be incapable of critiquing the party or its leader. This situation prompted Charles E. Kelly to draw this apt cartoon. Entitled ‘Testing cartoonists for the new daily paper’ it was published in Dublin Opinion in April 1931.
