Irish Women: Chains or Change?

Description

The new female journalism that emerged in the late 1960s / early 1970s saw female journalists move away from the traditional confines of female journalism (housekeeping, cooking, shopping tips) to address issues such as the inequality that Irishwomen faced in their day-to-day lives. The formation of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement (IWLM) followed in 1971 and the publication of ‘Chains or Change’ represented its proposals for the reform of Irish society. It includes a chapter entitled ‘Five Good Reasons to Live in Sin’ and its appearance resulted in the leaders of the IWLM being invited to appear on an all-female Late Late Show in March 1971 to discuss their demands for reform.
